Mahindra Roxor Overland | NEW Tires and Wheels

ROXOR: New Tires and Wheels for Overlanding!

The Mahindra Roxor is a one-of-a-kind utility vehicle! The Roxor combines the nostalgia of the MB Jeep with the latest diesel technology, from the world's largest manufacturer.

There is no other utility vehicle that offers the strong steel body and frame, rugged suspension, and powerful and economical Mahindra turbodiesel engine. The bullet-proof manual transmission and geared transfer case will outlast DOZENS of CVTs and rubber belts! For a full review of the advantages of the Roxor, see WHY Did I Replace my UTV With the Mahindra Roxor?

The Roxor base is a capable machine. But the first thing I modified was the tires to a more aggressive tread for off road, and a wider size for better flotation in sand and grip on slick rock.

I am not a hard-core rock crawler or mud bogger. My Roxor will see the most miles on the unlimited farm and forest roads in central and northern Wisconsin!

The Roxor is equipped with great 235/70R 16 all-terrain tires on steel rims (or aluminum rims for the "All-Weather package.) These are the perfect tires for farm work and are completely adequate for most owners. But I wanted slightly larger diameter for more ground clearance AND a wider tread for flotation on soft trails.

It is possible to have larger tires installed on the stock rims. However, the stock wheels have a deep offset to keep the vehicle width close to 60-inches. When you install wider tires on the stock wheels, it is necessary to also install 1.5" wheel spacers to prevent rubbing on the fenders, tail pipe, etc.

I decided that the best option was a set of new wheels, with the correct offset and 15" x 8" size. These new Fuel black aluminum wheels were paired with a set of Thunderer 31 x 10.5R15 tires.

The Roxor has PLENTY of suspension for these larger tires. Of course, the turbodiesel engine also has plenty of power and torque for the larger diameter and heavier combination. (See also the related article on replacing the WIMPY shocks to tame the leaf springs!)

The larger tires immediately provide a better ride on the stiff suspension. Future articles will cover the modifications I made to the base Roxor suspension to match my riding destinations.

The are a few aftermarket suspension lift options available for the Roxor. So far, I have not found it necessary to add any lift - and the larger tires add about an inch of ground clearance.

The more aggressive tread and sidewalls provide traction in sand, mud, and snow. The wider tread provides better grip on the slick rock I enjoy out West. Likewise, the greater volume allows me to "air down" for even more traction in rocks.

I would never consider starting any overland adventure without a spare tire. While the Roxor rides on tubeless tires that can often be plugged if you encounter nails or thorns, a nasty slash of the sidewall will require a spare tire.

Thankfully, Roxor offers a spare tire mount that is designed for the tail gate. Note: this tire mount does NOT include the bolts, nuts, and washers required for installation. Before installing the tire mount, I applied double-sided tape to the mating surfaces. I also used nylon locking nuts on the inside of the tail gate.

The same tire shop that provided my new wheels installed a matching larger 265/75 x 16" Thunderer tire on the original rim. Even though this rim is a mismatch with my new aluminum 15-inch wheels, the outer diameter of the tires is almost exactly identical. The only compromise is that this larger and wider tire required that I bolt it to the spare mount facing in rather than out.

The Roxor is unlike any work or sport utility vehicle on the market. It is a hybrid that splits the categories of Jeeps and UTVs - with the best features of both!

My Roxor now has superior tires to any light-duty UTV, plus a spare. These tires will last 50,000 miles - at least 10 times more than any UTV!

This is the level of performance and dependability that I REQUIRE for my overland "dream trips" of 1,000 miles and more!

What modifications have you made to YOUR Roxor?

What do you think? Would a Roxor meet your off road and overlanding requirements. Or is a lighter, more nimble SXS a better match.
