REVIEW: Saturn FPK365 Pedal Kayak

Saturn FPK365: The MOST affordable and versatile pedal kayak you can buy!

I recently purchased the Saturn FPK365 inflatable pedal kayak. Why? For portability when traveling.

The AFFORDABLE pedal fishing kayak! Saturn FPK365

I already own TWO pedal kayaks. I LOVE the efficiency of PEDAL kayaks over traditional PADDLE kayaks. But I don't want to strap either on my roof for a 4,000-mile round trip through the snow from Wisconsin to Arizona and back each Winter! The Saturn inflatable stores easily in my truck or would fit in most midsize SUVs.

The FIRST time I tried a pedal kayak was AMAZING. Most fishing kayaks are heavy. I PADDLED my plastic kayak for a few hundreds yards - and it was a workout. Not impossible, but not feasible if you want to venture more than a short distance from the landing.

Then, I started PEDALING. It was IMMEDIATELY obvious that my legs are stronger than my arms! My "seat of the pants" estimate is that pedaling is at least TWICE as efficient - meaning you can go much farther. Actually, using half the energy might translate into increasing your range by FOUR times - or more!

The other benefit of pedal kayaks is that your hands are free! You need to use one hand to occasionally steer via the remote rudder handle. But you can troll, reel in your lines, tie on baits, etc. while pedaling! You can also pedal while fighting a fish, steering the kayak into the wind or away from snags.

But there are MANY more advantages of the Saturn inflatable fishing kayak!

The first is the light weight! Plastic fishing kayaks are HEAVY - with many weighing over 100 pounds! There is NO WAY the average angler can cartop a rotomolded kayak.

In contrast, the 12-foot Saturn inflatable weighs only 43 pounds (with the pedal-drive removed). You can easily carry this kayak to the waterside. Add a set of portage wheels and you can roll it - with all of your fishing gear - from your vehicle to the landing or down a rough trail to a remote lake.

And YES - you can transport the Saturn kayak fully inflated - even strapped to a roof rack! MOST anglers won't deflate the kayak all Summer long. (Note: Saturn recommends not storing the kayak fully inflated between trips. Simply release some of the pressure in the air chambers. Then add a few pumps of air with the included hand pump before use.)

Light weight also means it takes less effort to propel the kayak. This is accentuated by the hull design. This inflatable kayak floats like a leaf on the water! The difference is that inflatable kayaks float ON the water, while standard boats sit IN the water. Even though the Saturn FPK365 weighs less, it supports MORE weight - with a conservative rating of 300-pounds. You can add TWO chairs and paddle this kayak as a tandem!

The Saturn FPK365 pedal kayak is built with three air chambers. The floor is a rigid platform with drop stitch construction - the same as inflatable paddle boards. Each side is a separate chamber that forms a super stable pontoon hull. It would take some deliberate effort to flip this kayak!

The rigid floor and side "pontoons" mean that you can easily stand up to fish. You can stand with more confidence than any paddle board!

The pedal kayak is supplied with a remote rear rudder, that is connected to a handle attached to the track to the right of the seat. If you prefer, you can paddle across lakes without the rear rudder, and install a fixed skeg in the front and/or rear mounting slots. OR - you can remove the rudder of store it in the upright position, remove the pedal drive, and run whitewater rapids in the Saturn kayak!

But the biggest advantage of the Saturn FPK365 pedal kayak is the low purchase price!

Kayak prices have skyrocketed! The cost of plastic is on the rise. What's worse, the cost of shipping bulky kayaks has more than doubled in the past few years. These increased manufacturing and shipping costs are passed on to the retail buyer. Most pedal fishing kayaks now cost well over $1,500 - with some over $2,500!

The Saturn FPK365 costs only $799.00, plus $99.00 for FedEx Ground shipping.

This price INCLUDES the pedal drive, a sturdy bag for storage, repair kit, and a hand pump. The base price does not include the chair shown in the photos, which is available as an option from BoatstoGo.com.

Here is a video that demonstrates the Saturn FPK365 on the water - both pedaling and paddling, solo and tandem:

Side note: The Saturn FPK365 kayak uses the same fin pedal drive invented by Hobie Kayaks over a decade ago. This Hobie Mirage drive remains the standard for durability and efficiency. Now that the patent has expired, other manufacturers have developed their own version - much to the benefit of consumers. The complete Saturn FPK365 pedal kayak PACKAGE now sells for roughly the same price as ONLY the original Mirage drive!!!

Have you tried an inflatable kayak yet? There are MANY advantages over the heavier, less versatile plastic versions! Of course, the price can't be beat! Leave your comments below. Then subscribe to the GreatOutThere.online blog for more kayak and outdoor content!
