A cheap, fast, and easy upgrade to the stock KLX300 that saves money - AND your backside!
I have modified dozens of motorcycles for "adventure touring". EVERY "ADV" cycle has required a seat cushion, either to add air flow and/or padding for all day riding. The KLX300 ADV Lite is no exception!
This shouldn't come as a surprise. The typical dual sport rider commutes to work or school, then rides a few miles of trails on the weekend. The majority of dual sport motorcycles will never venture far from home and fewer will rack up day after day of adventure touring.
This means that anywhere the brands can save a buck, they WILL! Such is the case with the Kawasaki KLX300 that is the base for this "ADV Lite" build series.
Like all dual sports, the stock KLX300 saddle is only designed for short, dual sport rides - where you are standing half the time!
But as an adventure motorcycle, the KLX300 ADV Lite must be comfortable for hours of riding, day after day, while seated!
While there are EXPENSIVE aftermarket complete saddles (and replacement cover kits), I wasn't willing to pay $300 or more! Instead, I spent less than $30.00 to add a seat pad that both makes the saddle softer and wider for all-day comfort!
The seat pad that I added included quick-release buckles on three straps. The saddle fits tight to the frame rails and there wasn't space for the bulky buckles - so I cut them off!
Then I laced the seat cushion to the saddle with strong, nylon twine. This twine is flexible and still allows the saddle to connect to the frame and bracket located on the gas tank. This video helps to explain the process:
The completed project took about 30 minutes and resulted in a saddle that is softer and wider - EXACTLY what I needed for the KLX300 ADV Lite edition. It also added more solid black to the "green machine"!
