Installing New Foot Pegs on the Adventure Grom | ADV Grom Build Series

This is the first in the series of articles that will detail the conversion of the Honda Grom into a useful commuter and light, adventure motorcycle.

I bought the Honda Grom specifically to ride on and off the pavement. Where I live in Central Wisconsin, there are equal miles of paved highways and secondary roads to unpaved rural roads.

After many thousands of miles on 10 larger “Adventure” motorcycles, I am excited to complete the build of the ADV Grom.

The most popular “ADV” motorcycles are grossly overweight and overpriced.

I always laugh when watching videos of adventure riders on motorcycles that cost TEN times more than the Grom, cruising back roads at 25 or 30 miles per hour. The ADV Grom loves cruising backroads all day, effortlessly at 40 MPH in 4th gear – all at over 100 miles per gallon!!!

I also laugh when the riders on huge “ADV” motorcycles require a three-man crew to pick up the hog when they tip over in the sand or mud!

At the same time, the Grom is vastly overshadowed by the marketing for the “CT125 “Trail” for off-pavement riding and the C125 Super Cub for commuting. Please see the related article for a complete comparison of these models – and the many reasons why I believe the Grom is superior.

Like most motorcycle brands, Honda saved a few pennies by installing cheap foot

pegs on the stock Grom. The stock foot pegs are perfectly fine for a few miles to the store or school and back. Anyone who wants to ride for HOURS – especially on more demanding unpaved roads – MUST upgrade to wider foot pegs for comfort and safety.

Luckily, aftermarket foot pegs are both cheap to buy and simple to install!

I bought the pegs shown from Amazon. Installation only requires pulling the cotter pin on the pivot pin, inserting the pin and spring on the new foot pegs, then replacing the cotter pin. With only a needle nose pliers, anyone should be able to complete this upgrade in less than 30 minutes.

Note that I reused the original pivot pin and cotter pin for a better fit than the parts supplied with the new pegs. The wider, more aggressive foot pegs were supplied with studs for motocross boots. The serrated edges of the pegs were sufficient for me, so I removed these studs.

Here is a comparison of the stock and replacement foot pegs on the Adventure Grom:

While I was down on my knees replacing the foot pegs, I also installed a “foot” on the kickstand. Since most of my riding is off the pavement, a little wider surface is helpful in the dirt. In addition, this foot adds a tiny bit to the angle – which will come in handy when I replace the stock street tires with the larger diameter Shinko Mobber knobbies!
